7 Bookish Halloween Costumes

My Halloween plans usually consist of staying home, cooking a fun themed dinner, and watching spooky movies. I am not one to go out. But, I always make sure to celebrate the holiday in one of my various onesies, so technically, I am in a costume. I try to be as festive as possible, while also being as comfortable as possible. Unfortunately, I have never spent the holiday in bookish Halloween costumes, but I think it would be so fun!

I know a lot of book worms out there love to dress up and go out on Halloween, so I am compiling a list of bookish Halloween costumes that I think would be spectacular!

1. Evelyn Hugo

Book cover of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Okay, I just know how amazing it would look to dress up as Evelyn Hugo. Gorgeous emerald dress, luscious red lips, Hollywood-ready costume jewelry. Pull out all the glamour you can as you enter the room, sparkling from head to toe.

Bonus: Make this a couple’s outfit and add Celia St. James!

2. A Rêveur

Book cover of The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

This one would be a super fun last-minute costume idea! Dress in black and white from head to toe, while adding a pop of red, such as a scarf or red shoes. Maybe go specific by carrying a small clock or pocket watch around with you, and become the most famous rêveur, Herr Friedrick Thiessen!

3. Kady Grant

Book cover of Illuminae by Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman

This would be another fun and easy Halloween costume. The main focus would be the bright pink hair! The rest of the outfit can be as simple or as futuristic as you want, but you have to have the pink hair! There would be a lot of fun characters to dress up as from Illuminae, like a giant tablet, a.k.a. Aiden!

4. A Tea Dragon

Book cover of The Tea Dragon Society by Katie O'Neill

I am so excited about this one, please tell me if you do it. A tea dragon costume would probably take a little more preparation, but can you imagine the adorable things you could do! Pick your favorite tea dragon, go to the craft store, get some fake leaves and flowers, stick them on some dragon horns, and finish off the outfit to match. it would look AMAZING, and it would be so cute. You would win in my costume contest!

5. Linh Cinder

Book cover of Cinder by Marissa Meyer

Linh Cinder has probably been done hundreds of times, but I couldn’t help but include her. Hey, I am all for the last-minute costumes, I am a master procrastinator. Grab some loose pants, a plain black top, and some gloves and your all good! Oh, and don’t forget the oil stains, if you want to go big!

Bonus: Make it a group costume, and add the whole Lunar Chronicles gang!

6. Alina Starkov

Shadow and Bone book cover

The antlers around her neck, the fetter on her wrist, the white hair. Honestly, I think it would be a blast to dress up as Alina! You can dress as everyday Alina, but I think it would be especially fun to be Sankta Alina fro Halloween. You can be as grandiose as you wish! Bring on the drama and the small flashlights hidden in your gloves so you can “call the light” This is definitely a costume that would take a bit more preparation.

Bonus: Make it a couple’s costume with Mal (or the Darkling), or a group costume with the whole gang (especially Oncat, don’t forget Oncat)

7. President Coriolanus Snow

Book cover of The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

Okay, I know what your thinking, please Jackie, everyone was Katniss in 2012, that is so 7 years ago. I know! Which is why I am proposing something a little different. Dress up as PRESIDENT SNOW! Yes, I am talking white hair, white beard, fancy velvet colored suit. You definitely have to be holding a white rose in one hand and a champagne glass in the other! Just… channel your inner Donald Sutherland.

Thank you for listening. Please send me pictures if you do this costume.

You didn’t really think I would go an entire post without talking about The Hunger Games, did you?

Okay, now I want all of us bookworms to come together and throw a bookish Halloween costume party. It would be so fun to try and figure out who everyone is. Can we please make this happen? Of course, there would be snacks and a quiet room for people who just want to sit and read. Still waiting for reading parties to become socially acceptable. A girl can dream!

Do you already have any bookish Halloween costumes planned for tomorrow? Or normal costumes? Let me know in the comments below what it is!

Happy Halloween Eve everyone! Have a safe weekend and have fun!

Love, Jackie

  1. These are some great ideas for costumes – I don’t think I’ve ever dress as a book character before!

Today I’m just in all my goth girl finery, and probably look a bit like one of the Weird Sisters from the new Sabrina reboot.
