I know, that title probably sounds super familiar! Last year I did a post talking about 20 books I wanted to read BEFORE 2020. Also, almost every booktuber or book blogger is making some sort of list similar to this. Well, last year I didn’t do well on that… at all. I don’t think I finished one. So, I am going to give it another try! I am hoping to read 50 books this year, these are just the 20 that are at the top of my TBR. But as we all know, there are an infinite amount of spaces on the top of my TBR, so stay tuned to see if I actually make it through all of the 20 books I plan to read in 2020.
Except, I do have a weird motivation to actually finish all of these books. My bullet journal. I recently started a bookish bullet journal to keep track of my reading (stay tuned for a post about that). I created a spread for these books, and I will just be sad if I can’t fill it all in. So, I will absolutely be finishing these 20 books this year! Or I’ll cry.
Anyway, I’m sure you actually want to know what books are actually on this list…
The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern
Ever since I read The Night Circus a couple years ago, I have been a fan of Erin Morgenstern. So, when The Starless Sea was announced, I knew I had to pick up a copy. To be honest, I do have a head start on this list, considering I started reading this book about a month ago. All I can say is, based on the first half, I can tell this book will be an A+ read.
Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo
Honestly, you wanna know the first thing that drew me to this book? The cover. As you know (or don’t know), I am a massive fan of dark, spooky books, and that is exactly the vibe I get from this. This cover is magnificent, even though I hate snakes. The book itself also sounds interesting. Something about Yale and cults or the occult or something. Idk, but whatever it is… I’m down.
The Diviners by Libba Bray
Again, I love me some spooky books, and I think this one is supposed to be about witches. I also loved A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray when I read it in middle school. Of course, I remember absolutely nothing about that series anymore. I should really plan a reread this year.
Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo
Another Leigh Barudgo, huh? Well, I really just want to read this book this year so I can be prepared for the coming TV show. And, so many people love this book, I want to see what the hype was about. I read the Shadow and Bone series already, so this is the next step.
A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab
I feel like you can probably start to see the trend. Yes, I love magical, spooky, and weird fantasy novels. Give them all to me, I’m ready.
Scythe by Neal Shusterman
I don’t think I have heard one bad thing about this book so…
Vicious by V.E. Schwab
Looks like 2020 will be a Bardugo and Schwab year. I have no problem with that. This one has something to do with villains, and I am a SUCKER for morally grey characters (hi Loki).
The Book Women of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michele Richardson
Remember when I said I want to read more historical fiction. This is one of those.
The Library Book by Susan Orlean
Here is another.
Crown of Feathers by Nicki Pau Preto
I received this book in an OwlCrate box last year and fell in love with the cover (Of course I judge books based on their cover). Also, have you ever read a book about phoenixes because I haven’t, so there’s that.
This Savage Song by Victoria Schwab
SCHWAB! So many people have recommended me this book, I figured I should see what it is all about.
The Maze Runner by James Dashner
Add this book to the list of books I want to read purely because I missed the dystopian era of YA. I have FOMO!
An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir
Honestly, I am always down for a good fantasy read, and this one has been on my TBR forever, so I figured this would be a good year to read it.
The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon
I bought this book literally one whole year ago, and I still haven’t read it. But 2020 will be the year. I will not be intimidated by the size!
Tiny Pretty Things by Sona Charaipotra and Dhonielle Clayton
I am a dancer, so of course one of my favorite topics to read about is dance. When this book gained popularity in the book community, it made my little dancing heart swell.
Ink and Bone by Rachel Caine
Any book about books or libraries immediately goes on my TBR, no questions asked. Also, this is a favorite of one of my favorite bloggers, paperfury, so I want to see what it is about.
I Wanna Be Where You Are by Kristina Forest
If I haven’t said this enough, I am a dancer.
The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken
Initially, I wanted to read this because the movies were coming out, and I was sad because I missed the excitement of waiting for each Hunger Games movie, so I thought this might give me the same thrill. Now, I just feel like I need to read it. I’m committed.
Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard
This is another one that I just feel like I should read. I have read so many negative reviews lately, but I also know that a lot of people had to like it for it to be this popular. So, I will fall prey to the hype and see if it leads me astray.
The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins
Honestly, I would read Suzanne Collin’s grocery list, but this will have to do. It is a prequel to my favorite series, of course, I am reading it as soon as it comes out. This is the only book on this list that I don’t own already, but I am including it anyway because I know with complete certainty that I will buy it on release day and begin reading it within the hour. Hopefully, I won’t have work…
I am so excited about all of these books. Some of them have been on my TBR forever, others are more recent additions. I have been struggling through a reading slump for months, so I am primed and ready to get lost in a story. I am hoping one of these fit the bill!
Have you read any of these books? What are your thoughts on them? Let me know in the comments below!
Good luck with your 202 TBR!
A lot of these are still on my TBR, I wonder if they’ll be as good as we hope.
I finally read Priory and it was amazing, I hope you enjoy it as much.

Good luck with reading all these books! A lot of these are on my TBR too!
as a more visual person i have to say i adore you stuck in the book covers. its so much more appealing than a list hmmm youve got me thinking
Aaah there are so many awesome books here! I hope you love Six of Crows. I’m hoping to read The Starless Sea this year too!
I am so excited for Six of Crows. And I finished The Starless Sea last month and omg! One of my favorites. I can’t wait for you to read it!
Oh my gosh so many of these are on my TBR haha. Maybe 2020 will be the year I finally get to them?
I finally read Priory earlier this year and it is AMAZING. Try to see it as a bind-up of multiple books rather than a book, that helped me.

Yes! I have confidence that we can read them this year! I am trying to think that way with Priory! It will definitely help haha
This is such a great idea for a blog post! Ah I’m so excited that Scythe is on your list! Hope you get around to it, it’s outstanding! One of my fave reads of 2019 🙂
Thank you so much! I haven’t made as much progress as I was hoping to, I keep getting distracted by other books lol! But I am definitely planning on reading Scythe before the end of the year.
