Trick-or-treat! Today’s the day! ‘Tis time! The spookiest night of the year is upon us, and it is time for jack-o-lanterns and Halloween candy. It is also time for my yearly tradition of completing the Halloween Book Tag.
It has become a very fun event each year when I complete these fun, Halloween-themed questions. You can see my post from 2020 here, and from 2019 here. These questions make me want to light up a jack-o-lantern and go trick-or-treating myself.
You can find the original creator of the tag, Naomi, on Youtube, so definitely check them out! I did change the prompt for one question relating to that transphobic author. I think you know the one I’m talking about… But other than that, these are all super fun, super spooky bookish questions.
Halloween has always been one of my favorite nights of the year. There is something in the cool, brisk air that brings me so much joy. I plan my Halloween nights starting at the beginning of October. I always make a Halloween-themed meal, watch a mix of horror and family-friendly movies, and eat all the candy I can find. It is my day for spooky self-care.
With blogtober coming to an end, I won’t be posting as much spooky-themed content, which always makes me sad. I’m never ready to stop my Halloween bookish blog posts. As much as I love the holidays, there is nothing like October. However, get excited for some winter, holiday, and Christmas-themed posts coming in a couple weeks!
But we still have a few more hours of Halloween, so let’s make it count! Here is the Halloween Book Tag!
Carving Pumpkins: What book would you carve up and light on fire
I will never not laugh at how violent and dramatic this question is. Imagine being so upset with a book that you actually cut it up and light it on fire. You know what… I kind of want to do that…
Anyway, I have said this a couple of times already on my blog, but I was incredibly disappointed by Red Rising by Pierce Brown. With all the rave and positive reviews I saw for this book a couple of years ago, I was expecting something way more developed and interesting. Instead I got 150 pages of the same thing.
Trick or Treating: What character is a trick, and what character is a treat?
Trick: Marcos from Tender is the Flesh by Augustina Bazterrica is by far my least favorite protagonist out of everything I have ever read… ever. The horror that he inflicts everyday is astounding, and I could not get past his actions throughout the story. Definitely a trick of a character.
Treat: On the opposite end, Julian Diaz from Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas is a sweet, wholseom ghost that I adored. Although he portrays a tough nut on the outside, he is such a genuine character once you read on, and get to know him a little better. He was a treat to read.
Candy Corn: What book is always sweet, and you will always love it?
It seems like I talk about a lot of the same books every book tag don’t I? The Halloween Book Tag is no exception. Some books just stay with you, like Lumberjanes by Noelle Stevenson, Grace Ellis, Shannon Watters, and Brooklyn Allen. These characters have such a strong found family relationship, it was so sweet. I could reread this graphic novel over and over again and I would never get bored. I can’t wait until I can get my hands on the next volume.
Ghost: What character would you love to have visit you?
I don’t know, maybe I have a thing for the dark, brooding characters, but there was something about Darlington from The Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo. I love a brooding character, and the way he cared for Alex throughout the story was really heartwarming. Of course, he didn’t outright show this, which is why I think we would get along. Because I don’t show my emotions either.
Dressing up in Costumes: What character would you want to be for a day?
Ignoring the social anxiety, I don’t need any more of that, I would love to spend a day as Eliza from Eliza and her Monsters by Francesca Zappia. Eliza is a content creator, and an incredibly successful one at that. I am an aspiring successful content creator. Therefore, I would love to take a day inside her head. See how it feels to live my dream. Maybe get some pointers to take with me.
Witches & Wizards: What is a book featuring magical characters
I picked up Legendborn by Tracy Deonn, and I immediately knew that this was going to be a great read. Truthfully, I have not finished this book, but I am certain there are magical characters within the story. This book is a retelling of the legend of King Arthur, set at a modern college. I absolutely love the characters, and everything about the plot is super immersive.
Blood and Gore: What book was so creepy that you had to take a break from it for a while?
I felt physically ill while reading Tender is the Flesh by Augustina Bazterrica. I have never been so impacted by a story as I was with this one. The descriptions of the treatment of actual humans in this story was unthinkable, and yet somehow possible. It made me queasy, that’s for sure. I had to stop reading this book several times to stop from feeling nauseated.
Once and for all, Happy Halloween! I hope everyone had a fantastic month of October, and enjoyed all the spookiness that this holiday has to offer.
And for anyone who participated in blogtober, CONGRATULATIONS for getting to the end. It is a lot of work, but you are amazing for doing it!
While I am sad to see my favorite holiday come and go, I did have a lot of fun this month with blogging and celebrating the season. You can see my October wrap-up of all the books I read and my favorite blog posts created by clicking here!
