Moonstruck is one of those graphic novels that put a huge smile on my face. I discovered my love for these characters in the first volume, that I reviewed here, so I was excited to reenter the world of Julie, Selena, and Chet.

I was really looking forward to continuing to read about the world that was created in these graphic novels. I love the cast of characters and was excited to see what antics they got up to in volume 2. However, I was a little let down by this second installment.
I am still such a massive fan of the art style and characters of the Moonstruck graphic novels. I love the dynamic colors and illustrations, that tell so much of the story. The characters are all so lovable and real. Even when things weren’t going perfect in Selena and Julie’s relationship, it still felt real. They are in a new relationship, and there is a lot about them navigating that while also dealing with the situation at hand.
I am also a huge fan of the world that is created in these graphic novels. I am a sucker for a college town full of mystical creatures, I guess. In this edition, readers get to learn a bit more about the college, which I found really interesting. We get to see greek life, and how it works being controlled by faires. Spoiler alert, it isn’t good.
Although I enjoyed all of this, I was let down by the plot, which seemed non-existant. I felt myself tuning out a lot because I would be confused as to what actually was happening. A lot of the time, it felt like there was no reasoning behind the conflict. Why were the fairy greek houses feuding? Were they even feuding? Why did the frat fairies want the band to play for them so desperately? It just didn’t make much sense. It also didn’t feel like there was an ending, everything just… ended. I don’t know if that makes sense, but the characters were in quite a pickle and then they just… weren’t.
Despite the plot being… confusing… I am still giving this graphic novel 4 stars. Maybe I am too much of a sucker for pastel magical creatures. I was still entertained while reading, and I guess that is what’s more important, right?
This was my first time giving a graphic novel under 5 stars. I guess you can call that growth. I think I am reading more graphic novels, so I am starting to learn what I do and do not like. The characters and world of Moonstruck were so enjoyable, it made up for the sloppy plot problems.
