It seems like I only ever read graphic novels during autumn, doesn’t it? There is something about the cooler weather I guess, that makes me want to sit down and enjoy beautiful art. It is also the time for my favorite type of graphic novel, a cozy one. Which is exactly what Lumberjanes is. This is one of the coziest graphic novels ever, and I am upset I waited so long to read it.
A couple of years ago, I had previously read Nimona by the same author and absolutely loved it. The characters were so loveable, and I adored the art style. It was then that I added Lumberjanes to my TBR. However, as we all know, once a book is on the TBR, it is nearly impossible to get off of it. It’s like a black hole.
Most of the graphic novels I decide to read have the same genre and vibe. For example, some of my favorites are The Tea Dragon Society by Kay O’Neill and Sheets by Brenna Thummler. Both of these have a lot in common, from the art style to the writing style. They are also both very wholesome.
So, when I am deciding what my next graphic novel will be, I definitely strive for something similar to my two favorites. Lumberjanes did all that and more. In fact, this graphic novel is now sitting right up there with the rest of them on my list of favorites.
But let’s be honest, I’m pretty easy to please when it comes to graphic novels. Even if it has the most basic storyline, as long as the art is aesthetic and the characters are loveable, I will enjoy it. Sometimes I read reviews of stories like Moonstruck by Grace Ellis and I realize some people really aren’t here just for the vibes.
But anyway, here is my very positive, super intellectual review of Lumberjanes by Noelle Stevenson. I definitely analyze all the story-telling tools used here with great detail. Just kidding, here is me raving for a couple paragraphs about how much I love these characters.

The Review
Rating: 5/5 Stars
I’m going to start this review off by saying, I am in love. This has to be the most wholesome graphic novel I have ever read. And this is high praise because I only read wholesome graphic novels. I did not stop smiling once while reading this story.
Lumberjanes is about a group of campers at a summer camp. While trying to do normal camp activities like take boats out on the river or go on a nature hike, they seem to get themselves into some sticky situations, against the wishes of their camp counselor. But these situations aren’t what they seem to be. There is something supernatural happening at this camp, and they want to figure out what it is.
The first thing I loved was the characters. Each and every one of the characters was completely unique. They have their very own voice, personality, and vibe. Their interactions with each other are so wholesome, this graphic novel is the epitome of the found family trope, one of my favorite tropes.
The group of campers that this story revolves around all love and support each other through every sticky situation that they get themselves into. And by the end of the book, even their camp counselor joins the party. They create this adorable, supportive family that can get through anything with all of their brains working together.
The situations that these characters are put in is such a huge part of why I loved this story. They can be doing something completely mundane, like going on a hike, and all of a sudden they are trapped in an underground temple with mysterious anagrams and booby traps.
The chapters included in this volume left so many questions in my mind, I know I will be reading the sequels. Despite this, I felt like the reader got such a good understanding of the characters, it didn’t matter if all the magical plot lines weren’t wrapped up. Plus, that’s just how graphic novels work.
Overall, this is a graphic novel that will definitely put a smile on your face. The wholesome characters and magic make this a perfect fall read, or any time of year. If you love a found family full of fun characters and magic, you will love Lumberjanes by Noelle Stevenson
This first volume of Lumberjanes was just a taste, and I already want so much more. Unfortunately, my local library only has the first volume, so I am stuck searching for the other sections elsewhere, but I will be reading everything from this series of graphic novels. I love these characters too much not to.
Although Lumberjanes was set during a summer camp, this is the perfect story for Autumn. I always love reading fantastical and magical stories during the fall and winter, and this has just that. Plus, the relationship between all the characters is so heartwarming, it will get me through all the cold nights this season has to offer.
Let me know in the comments below what your favorite graphic novel is! Bonus if it has a colorful or pastel aesthetic, those are my favorite!
