Sheets by Brenna Thummler – Book Review

I have been exploring the world of graphic novels lately, so when I came across Sheets, I knew I absolutely had to read it. Obviously, this was the perfect season to read it as it is about a ghost! But don’t fear, you aren’t going to be scared of this ghost. He is the cutest spookiest ghost out there, and he is here to help, even if you don’t want it…

Firstly, I wanted to point out this graphic novel’s magnificent art style because it is one of the main reasons I was initially drawn to it. The colors pop, and the dynamic style of illustration made me a happy camper. Basically, I would just pause while I was reading this to admire all of the details that that artist was able to put onto one page.

I also adored the absolutely lovely story that Brenna Thummler told. The graphic novel held heart while the characters remained well-rounded and interesting. I adored both the main characters and I wanted to see them happy. Therefore, I have to mention that magnificent ending! That’s a happily ever after if I’ve ever read one!

Also, can we talk about how original and thoughtful this story was? On the surface, you see the adorable idea that ghosts actually wear sheets. However deeper down, this graphic novel captures a sense of grief, loneliness, and struggle that many young adults go through. This story tells people that they are not alone and that there is someone (or someghost) out there looking after them. Honestly, it warms my heart, my soul, and my whole body!

I went into this graphic novel expecting an adorable ghost story. Basically, I was expecting the definition of spooky. Instead, I got something even better. I connected with real and warm characters, learning of their struggles, that helped shape them into the person, or ghost, that they are. I loved it, and I would highly recommend it!

    1. I have been looking for more like this as well. I have been hearing a lot about Mooncakes, and I would really love to read that one. Also, not spooky, but I read Nimona a couple months ago and loved that one!

    1. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. I was definitely not expecting the darker themes that were included but they were done incredibly well!
