I’m a mood reader. Usually, I need to be in a specific state of mind to read certain genres, and it changes so often that I often read up to 5 books at a time to suit whichever mood I’m in.

Therefore, I present a whole bunch of options for your summer reading list! I have read and enjoyed every book on this list. Hopefully, this list of beach reads for any mood can give some ideas for your summer TBR!

Girls of Paper and Fire by Natasha Ngan is about Lei, who joins eight other women chosen to serve the king for a year. They spend all day every day together, learning how to be the king’s consort. However, instead of focusing all her attention on serving the king, Lei does something forbidden, and she falls in love with another woman in the consort.

Although this book had a lot of mixed reviews when it first came out, I was a massive fan. The fantastical world seems so real while reading, and the characters jumped straight off the page. I am looking forward to reading the sequel, Girls of Storm and Shadow, once I get my hands on a copy.

I am not a massive fan of YA mystery books because they tend not to excite me, but One of Us is Lying by Karen M. McManus is one of the best mystery books I have ever read. I listened to the audiobook a couple of summers ago, and I was completely enthralled until the very last chapter. This book is about five high school students who find themselves in the middle of a murder investigation and the entire school thinks one of them did it.

This is a super engaging and exciting read, it will definitely help you forget the summer heat!

If there is one subject I can never consume enough, it is anything about cults. I find them incredibly interesting. If you are like me in this sense, then you should read The Project by Courtney Summers.

This book is about Lo, who lost her sister, the only family she has left, to a cult 6 years previously. In an attempt to gain her back, Lo takes a job with her newspaper, investigating the cult, where she gains access to a place that has been previously closed. As she learns more, she realizes that her sister needs saving, and she will do anything to free her.

I am sure most people have heard of Heartstopper by Alice Oseman. With the recent and very popular Netflix series that everyone is talking about, Heartstopper has become a huge topic of conversation, and for good reason. This sweet and soft graphic novel is one of my favorites of all time.

This graphic novel is about Charlie Springer, and Nick Nelson, two high school boys who spark up a friendship when they are sat next to each other in class. As the year goes on, this friendship between the two grows stranger, until it is something more. This story is full of sweet first loves, friendship, and more. I always have the biggest smile on my face while reading them.

Even better is there are multiple volumes! The adorable fun never ends. If you have already read this series, this is your sign to reread!

Lumberjanes is a graphic novel that follows a group of campers who want to enjoy the sun, lake, and friends. However, their summer continues to be interrupted by magical creatures that wish to do them harm. Together they work to fight these evil forces while still managing to find moments of enjoyment.

I adored the characterization in this graphic novel. Each of the characters has such a specific voice, this quickly became a favorite of mine! Read this if you are in the mood for something sweet, wholesome, and exciting.

If you are in the mood for a dystopian…

Although I do love escaping the world, sometimes reading dystopian with links to the world we are living in now is just as powerful. So if you want to read something that might be a little too close to home but still enthralling nonetheless, check out The Grace Year by Kim Liggett.

This book is about a society in which, at age 16, all young girls are sent away for a year to rid themselves of their power over men. Tierney is one of those girls, and she starts to notice something off about the community she lives in, and the people around her. This book speaks deeply about a group of people without autonomy over themself, which is an incredibly important topic of conversation now, especially in the state that the American political system is in.

Come on, did we really think I could make dystopian book recommendations and not bring up my favorite book series? There is never a bad time to read The Hunger Games. Especially with the new movie for The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes coming out at the end of this year.

Anyway, this book is set in a world where 12 children are sent into an arena to fight until the death while rich citizens watch, make bets, and sensationalize the traumatic event. One of these participants, Katniss, is just trying to stay alive and go home to her family, but she ends up doing a lot more, which might change the course of the country.

This entire series is a great summer read or reread! Of course, I had to include it on my list of beach reads for any mood!

Whatever mood you are in, there is a story out there waiting for you to crack it open on the beach, in the park, or chilling out at home.

That was dramatic…

Anyway, I hope you found a book you are interested in reading on this list of beach reads for any mood!
