August TBR & Read-a-Thon

If you remember, back in April, I posted about joining my very first read-a-thon. I was so excited, planning my TBR and preparing for the month. However, exactly one month later, you can find me explaining how I failed, EPICALLY, at this. I only finished one book, and it was a 70-page graphic novel. As you can tell, this was the beginning of the reading slump that has plagued me ever since.

So, with this failure looming over my head, why would I choose to join another read-a-thon?

I have a death wish…

No, I’m just kidding! This time of year, I always get in the worst reading slumps. I don’t know if it’s the weather, the aliens above my head, or the retrograde of our dear friend Mercury, but I usually struggle a lot to get through any book I try to pick up. Therefore, I have decided to combat this head-on. I am hoping that joining a read-a-thon will spark something within me, bringing the book dragon back to life!

The read-a-thon that I am participating in has a Disney theme. It began a couple days ago, on August 1. You can learn more about it on their twitter page.

The four teams you could select from included Tangled, Lion King, Alladin, and Mulan. I chose…

The Prompts…

Repunzel: Read a book with glowing reviews

Book cover of Illuminae by Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman

This book has been on my TBR forever. I have listened to countless people rave about how amazing it is. As a lover of science-fiction, I knew I had to read it. The current average star rating of the book on Goodreads is 4.31, which is incredibly high for this genre. The format of the book is… insane! I have never seen anything like it before, and I am excited to see why the book looks the way it does.

Flynn Rider: Read a dark/mysterious book

Book cover of The Tenth Girl by Sara Faring

Do I need to even say anything after looking at that cover? How spooky is that! I received an ARC of this book at YALLWEST. It officially comes out in September, so I was planning on reading it in August anyway. How lucky am I that it literally fits perfectly into this prompt!

The Snuggly Duckling Crew: Read a book with a dreamy cover

Book Cover of The Surface Breaks by Louise O'Neill

I can’t even use words to describe how gorgeous this book cover is. The color composition, the design. In conclusion, the book cover gives me heart eyes.

Mother Gothel: Read a book featuring a power-hungry character that is also outside of your comfort zone

Book Cover of Nimona by Noelle Stevenson

I know little to nothing about this book. I was struggling to find a book that would fit into this prompt because not much is outside my comfort zone. The only genre I rarely read is contemporary, and I was hard-pressed to find a contemporary book with a power-hungry character, even though I’m sure it exists. So, in my time of need, I turned to twitter for recommendations and I found this. It is outside my comfort zone because I have only read a graphic novel one other time, which was The Tea Dragon Society, and I adored that one. This actually sounds pretty interesting, and I can’t wait to try out another graphic novel.

Maximus: Read the group book

Of course, I didn’t have much say in the group book, but that isn’t much of a problem here. Honestly, I chose which team I wanted to be on based on the group book. I purchased A Curse so Dark and Lonely a couple of months ago after hearing so much praise for it all over the internet. It would have probably sat on my shelf for years to come if it weren’t for this read-a-thon.

Pink flower Border

Five books in 30 days? After many months of barely reading one book. Can I do it? I guess you will have to tune in at the end of August to see how I do.

Have you read any of these books? Are they good? What are you planning on reading this month?

    1. Thank you so much! That was exactly how I was the last read-a-thon I participated in. I think I have managed 2 out of the five books. I don’t think I’ll be able to finish all five but I am proud of what I did. And, I can’t wait to read A Curse so Dark and Lonely

    1. I think the writing was my favorite part of The Tenth Girl! It was a really unique story. Illuminae is great!
