Review

Content Warnings: Mentions blood, murder, death, and grief.

This is a short novella in the “Darkened Nights: History Book” series, attached to the “Once Upon a Darkened Night” series. These are twisted retellings of well-known fairytales and this one is based on the tale of Cinderella.

This story moves along nicely, pushing the reader through the plot because it is easy to follow. It is fast moving and there are no slow parts that make me want to stop reading. The writing is simple but good for someone looking to have an easy read. It is appropriate for a middle grade reader who is mature enough to deal with the subjects mentioned at the beginning of this review. The story contains a lot of dialogue, which also helps push the story along and makes it a quick read. Because the story is mostly dialogue, there is not a lot of world building or characterization. However, because the story is focused on King Hubert, we receive a little more insight on his emotions and thoughts.

Overall, this novella added well to the story started with Of Cinder and Madness. Throughout the “Darkened Nights: History Books,” we learn about reasoning and thoughts from the main characters, adding to the interest of the story. This book is for a young reader looking for a quick fantasy series.
