March Book Releases of 2022 – Books You Need to Know About

When I think of March, I think of new beginnings. Spring is starting, the weather is nice, and I am ready to go sit outside on my patio with a glass of iced tea and a good book. The one good thing about the end of autumn and winter, my favorite seasons, is the ability to sit outside and read. I am looking forward to that in March! Because of this, today I want to talk about some of the March book releases I am excited for in the coming month.

Like I have said one thousand times, fall and winter are my favorite seasons. But not only for the weather, food, and activities. But also the books. I love the dark and magical books that tend to come out during that time of year. So when spring and summer come around, I have to work extra hard to find books I am excited about. I have to wade through all the contemporary books until I find something I like.

Don’t get me wrong, contemporary and romance books are fun to read on occasion, and even better during the spring season. I read my fair share of this genre during the warmer months. But you know me and my obsession with fantasy. I just don’t get as excited about spring books as I do books published during the fall and winter.

Anyway, here are some of the March book releases I am excited about! There is a wide variety of genres on this list, so hopefully, you can find something you’re excited about as well!

This is a debut young adult fantasy novel that is set in a world inspired by ancient Mesoamerica. I am so intrigued by the premise of this book, and I can’t wait to meet the characters!

All My Rage by Sabaa Tahir

Release Date: March 1, 2022

One of the most popular YA authors right now, Sabaa Thair is bringing a realistic contemporary fiction book this time with All My Rage. This book is about two characters struggling to hold onto their identity while also navigating friendships and family.

Sal is busy running his family business while his parents fall to sickness and alcoholism. In the same small town of Juniper, California, Sal’s ex-best friend Noor is working at a liquor store while trying to figure out a way out of the small town through college.

There is so much praise for this book already, I can’t wait to dive into Sal and Noor’s story. I like to sprinkle in a little reality with all the fantasy and mysticism I tend to read!

The Book of Living Secrets by Mad

Release Date: March 1, 2022

Yet another book I will be adding to my collection simply because of the cover. The planchette, the tentacles, the skulls, and the flowers? All beautiful.

According to Goodreads, this book is about Adelle and Connie, two best friends who are obsessed with a gothic book, Moira. One day, someone shows up and magically inserts the friends into their favorite book. However everything is a little different, and they start to realize that there may be something more nefarious going on than meets the eye.

If you know me, you know how much I love reading books about books, readers, or other bookish things. So this one is definitely one of my favorites on this list of March book releases, and it isn’t only because of the cover!

The Night Shift by Alex Finlay

Release Date: March 1, 2022

The premise of The Night Shift by Alex Finlay is giving off The Sundown Motel vibes and I am here for it. This book starts at the beginning of 2000 when night shift workers at a blockbuster are attacked and only one survives. The case soon runs cold. However, 15 years later, it happens again to another set of night shift workers. Again, there is only one survivor. Soon the lives of the two survivors become entangled and they work together to unravel the mystery behind their attacks.

Reading this premise, I am reminded of the thousands of crime movies and TV shows I watch every year, and I know this will be an intriguing novel. I can’t wait to dive into this book.

When We Were Birds by Ayanna Lloyd Banwo

Release Date: March 15, 2021

I have been wanting to read more magical realism, so the release of When We Were Birds by Ayanna Lloyd Banwo comes at the perfect time. This book is set in Port Angeles, at the residence of a long line of women who are tasked with ushering souls of the departed to the afterlife. Yejide is tasked to do just that when her mother passes.

A little ways away, Darwin was raised to never interact with the dead. However, when he needs to find a job, and the only one available is a gravedigger, he has to make do. These two characters are brought together, and a relationship forms from there.

In all honesty, I love books about the dead, or where death is a theme. I have no idea why, I just do. So I am super excited for this story!

The Cartographers by Peng Shepherd

Release Date: March 15, 2022

Aside from yet another stunning cover, The Cartographers by Peng Shepherd sounds like the perfect book to transition from winter to spring. This book is about Nell, who has a passion for maps, and so does her dad. So when her father is found dead, and some old highway map is found hidden in his desk, she wants to investigate why. She soon learns that someone is trying to hunt down each of these maps and destroy them and she might very well be holding the last copy. She just doesn’t know what’s so special about this map.

If there isn’t at least one map illustration in this book, I’m gonna sue… Just kidding, this book sounds so good. I am ready for some adventurous treasure hunting-type story. I have no idea if there is any actual treasure in this book, but that’s what I think about when I think about hidden maps.

The Bone Orchard by Sara A. Mueller

Release Date: March 22, 2022

I’ll be honest, the first thing that attracted me about The Bone Orchard by Sara A. Mueller was the cover. I will definitely be adding this book to my collection. Despite the beautiful cover, it also has a really interesting plot!

This book centers around Charm, a witch secluded to one house after people hunted her and people like her. She spends her days tending to the trees of the orchard and her nights tending to the members of the court, and the emperor himself. However, when the emperor calls her to his death bed, he gives her a proposition. Figure out which of his sons murdered him, and he will grant her freedom.

This sounds like a twisty and interesting tale and I am so excited to get my hands on a copy.

Kis & Tell by Adib Khorram

Release Date: March 22, 2022

The fact that I am listening to my One Direction playlist may or may not be influencing this addition to my March book releases list, but I am so excited to read Kiss & Tell by Adib Khorram. It is giving me 2010 vibes, and I am ready for all of it.

This story is about Hunter, the only gay member of a world-famous boy band. Following his public breakup with his boyfriend, Hunter is expected to be the perfect role model for queer teens, but that is a very lonely place to be. When he starts falling for a member of the opening act of the tour, his label isn’t too happy about it.

I know this book is going to hit me with so much nostalgia, and I don’t know if I’m ready for it. I had a huge boyband phase…

Wild and Wicked Things by Francesca May

Release Date: March 29, 2022

The first thing I learned about Wild and Wicked Things by Francesca May is that it is a retelling of The Great Gatsby but with magic. Although I have never actually read said classic, I am always a huge fan of retellings, and I love seeing author’s takes on other stories.

According to the summary, this book is set in the mid-1900s, when many fear magic. When Annie goes to Crow Island to finish up some things with her father’s estate, she meets her neighbor Emmeline who is rumored to use magic. Then Annie witnesses a fight between her new neighbor and a childhood friend. This pulls Annie into a world of dangerous magic.

These March book releases have to be some of the prettiest I have seen in a long time! All of these book covers are worth a purchase for the aesthetic alone, ignoring how amazing the plots actually sound.

I will say, I am surprised by how many of the new book releases coming in March are outside the contemporary romance genre. Despite what I said at the beginning of this post, it was pretty easy to find books that fit the genres I usually read.

I am mistaken. I apologize if I causes any grief or confusion!

Despite this, there are still a ton of romance and realistic fiction being published in March, so check those out if you are interested! You can check out this post from The Booklist Queen, which has a lot more March new releases, in a wide variety of genres.

Or you can check out Beyond the Bookends for a post of March Book Releases divided into various genres. That way you can know immediately which books you want to keep an eye out for!
