Halloween Creatures Book Tag: Round 3

When I think of Halloween, I think of creepy monsters and scary ghosts, which is why I find the Halloween Creatures Book Tag to be so much fun. The questions are based on various Halloween creatures. Thinking about witches and goblins brings be back to the time of trick-or-treating and Halloween costume parades in elementary school. It makes me nostalgic.

I have completed this tag, unsurprisingly, 2 other times on this blog, which you can see here (2019) and here (2018). And of course, I have to give my friendly reminder to ignore most of the answers I included in those posts… it was a long time ago. And my writing is not the best either.

Anyway, I took a break from doing the Halloween Creatures Book Tag last year, so I have forgotten all of the prompts and I think this will be fun.

The creator of the tag is Anthony from Keep Reading Forward. This is always one of my favorite posts to make this time of year, so props to the creator for that. Go check out their blog!

Witch:A Magical Character or Book

I read a lot of magical books, but A Song Below Water by Bethany C. Morrow was one of the best books I read this year. In a world where being a siren can get you killed, Tavia must keep her identity under wraps. Luckily she has her best friend Effie to help. However, when a famous internet star reveals her siren identity, Tavia’s world is rocked, along with everyone else in the country. This book was such a fantastic blend of fantastical elements with real-world issues. I adored the two main characters and their relationship. I wish I can read 100 more books in this universe. Luckily I get one more with A Chorus Rises, the sequel in this series with the most beautiful cover! See below!

This illustration. The pink. The title. It is all perfection, I can’t wait to add this book to my collection. I know the two books in this series will look beautiful together on my shelf.

Werewold: The Perfect Book to Read at Night

For me, the perfect book to read at night is something that is going to spook me, and Home Before Dark by Riley Sager did just that. When Maggie inherits her parent’s old home, she is excited to renovate it. She doesn’t believe the stories her dad used to tell about the house being haunted. However, now that she is spending time in the house, she starts to hear weird things. This story mixes horror and mystery to create a really fun read.

Although I have never felt real terror while reading a book, I came close with this one. There is something about old creepy houses that get to me.

However, if you aren’t looking for something scary I would avoid this book, and maybe all of Riley Sager’s books. Maybe check out these nice and fluffy contemporary reads if you aren’t into all the spookiness.

Frankenstein: A Book that Truly Shocked You

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed reading One of Us is Lying by Karen M. McManus. Not only that but I was actually shocked by the ending as well. I would have never guessed what actually happened. Having read a couple other YA mysteries, I went into this story with pretty low expectations. Luckily it exceeded them. This book is about four teenagers who are all suspected of killing a fellow student. The twists, turns, and drama makes this story great, and I was thrilled to learn that there is a sequel called One of Us is Next. I just borrowed it from my library and I will be starting it promptly.

The Devil: A Dark, Evil Character

The king in Girls of Paper and Fire by Natasha Ngan was truly one of the more horrific villains I have read in a long time. I even included him on my list of 5 horrifying villains in books. The things he did and the way he treated the characters in this story made me feel physically ill. I am curious where this story, and the character of the king, go from here, in the sequel.

Grim Reaper: A Character that Should Never Have Died

I am only using Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins because I don’t want to spoil anyone on the newer books I have read. So don’t come at me for adding The Hunger Games in every book tag I do! But also… did Suzanne Collins really have to kill him. You know who I am talking about. Fishy spear-man! He did not have to die : (

Zombie: A Book that Made You “Hungry” for More

Gargoyle: A Character that You Would Protect at All Cost

I honestly would die for all five of the main characters from Lumberjanes by Noelle Stevenson, Grace Ellis, Shannon Watters, and Brooklyn Allen. This graphic novel is the most wholesome out of everything I read this month… maybe even this year. These characters will definitely put a smile on your face, they deserve the world.

Vampire: A Book that Sucked the Life Out of You

I’m sorry but Red Rising by Pierce Brown was one of my least favorite books I read this past year. It took everything in me to even finish this book. This story is about Darrow, who pretends to be a part of an upper class in society in order to get revenge for the death of his wife. This book was on my TBR for the longest time, I had such high hopes for it. I love this type of story, but this was just… not it. The world and characters were not fleshed out at all, and all the important bits of this story could have been squeezed into 100 pages. So many unnecessary words with no purpose to them.

Ghost: A Book that Still Haunts You

I am taking this prompt in a very positive life by mentioning The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang. After I finished this book, I could not stop thinking about it. The world that Kuang writes is so rich in color and intrigue, I felt like I was living in it long after I closed the book. This story is about Rin, who tests into the best military school in the country. Here she learns fighting, strategy, and how to talk to gods. The characters in this book have stuck with me for months, and I am planning on picking up book two in this series soon.

Demon: A Book that Really Scared You

Like I said in the previous prompt, I have never been scared because of a book. But I have been astounded, and only once, with Tender is the Flesh by Agustina Bazterrica. This book was on a whole other level, one I wasn’t prepared to be on. This story is set in a society where animals are no longer edible. So, people start to eat… other people. This book just got worse and worse. It was like a train wreck. Absolutely horrendous but I couldn’t look away. Please look at the content warnings before reading this book, it’s… intense.

Skeleton: A Character You Have a Bone to Pick With

I specifically have a bone to pick with Princess Beatrice, and it is only because I want her to be happy. In American Royals by Katharine McGee, the king and queen of America want their daughter, the first in line to the throne, to marry. But they have a select list of candidates for her pick from. Look, I know I will never understand the complexities of the royal family, but I just want Beatrice to stand up to her parents and be with the one she loves. Is that too much to ask. Hopefully, book two will bring that for me.

Mummy: A Book You Would Preserve Throughout Time

Obviously, I am going to have to go with one of my favorite books, The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern. I want to put this story in a time capsule, open it in 50 years, and reread the magical world that Morgenstern created. Of course, that will be impossible because I will definitely be doing a reread in a couple of years. But anyway, this is a fantastic book that follows Zachary Rawlins, who is pulled into a magical world after reading a strange book he finds at his college library. This book made me want to find this magical world, deep underground, full of cats and books. It sounds like a dream.

Creepy Doll: A Cover too Scary to Look At

This book just came out a couple weeks ago, and it is by far the creepiest and spookiest book cover of the year. I mean… just look at it! Nothing but Blackened Teeth by Kassandra Khaw is about a beautiful mansion often used as an event venue. However, this mansion is haunted by a ghost bride with blackened teeth. All I’m saying is, if I was the ghost from the cover coming at me, I would be running hard in the opposite direction. No, thank you! I haven’t had the chance to read this book yet, but I am planning on it soon.

I’m telling you, the theme of the Halloween Creatures Book Tag, and the creativity of the prompts always put a smile on my face. Plus, the prompts actually make me think, which is fun. I like when a book tag’s prompts can be interpreted multiple ways. It feels more like a game while I am completing it.
