Do you ever get sick of being scared and spooked all the time during this month? Have you had enough with the dark stories? Yeah me either, but I know a lot of people who aren’t really a big fan of the stories that are so popular this time of year, full of ghosts and ghouls. I get it. Sometimes I just crave a happy story full of heart and light.
I was never much of a contemporary reader until this year. I tried multiple times, buying and reading stories that everyone else was loving and I just didn’t understand why it wasn’t taking. The difference this year was that I decided to read contemporary books with the audiobook and it made all the difference. There is something about that genre that I can only enjoy while listening to the audiobook.
I have powered through some amazing happy and warm stories this year, so here are some recommendations if you have had enough spookiness. I did a post similar to this last year, so definitely check it out here!
Let’s Talk About Love by Claire Kann
This is one of my favorite books that I read this year. Let’s Talk About Love by Claire Kann has so much warmth and heart. I adored the characters and the storyline and everything about this story. The main character definitely put a smile on my face.
Get a Life, Chloe Brown by Talia Hibbert
Oh, this book has so much humor and love in it, it definitely put a smile on my face when I read it. Get a Life, Chloe Brown by Talia Hibbert has one of my favorite main characters that I’ve read in a long time, from her care for cats to her obsession with stationery. I loved every little thing that author offered us about her personality. Oh, and Redford Morgan wasn’t too bad either!
Loveboat, Taipei by Abigail Hing Wen
What can I say, I am a sucker for a main character who is a dancer. Watching Ever, from Loveboat, Taipei by Abigail Hing Wen, follow her dreams and do whatever it takes to do something she loves, dancing, was so heartwarming and inspiring. And getting to see her dad watch her perform was even more amazing! I absolutely adored this book.
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid
I read The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid last year, but it still holds a top spot for me. I loved getting to follow Evelyn Hugo throughout her life in Hollywood. The characters were so real and tangible, it was hard to believe that this wasn’t written about real people. This book does have some sad elements, but definitely nothing spooky.
Heartstopper by Alice Oseman
I might as well throw a graphic novel in here too because they are great ways to distract from and spooky vibes around. Heartstopper by Alice Oseman is just an adorable love story, plain and simple. There is not much to it other than the two main characters falling in love over the course of their school year. It is adorable and heartwarming, and all the good things you want from a romance story.
I think one thing that ties all of these stories together is the strong main characters. Characterization is so important for me to enjoy a story, and since there isn’t much excitement or magic in contemporary reads to intrigue me, it is doubly important. With fantasy, you can get away with a plot-driven story more than you can in contemporary. For me at least!
