April 2023 Book Releases

Spring is here! Time for flowers, sunshine, and allergies! All jokes aside, this has been an incredibly long winter, so I am thrilled that we are finally reaching spring. I could use some vitamin D! I could also use some new books, which is why I am so excited to be talking about all of the April 2023 book releases coming out next month! There are so many exciting books in this mix.

For the longest time, I have always considered myself a mood reader. Once I finished a book, I would stand up, walk to my bookshelves, and select whichever book fits my fancy at the time.

However, as I am getting back into reading after a long break, I have discovered that I might actually be a TBR reader. At least for now! It is nice to have a set TBR before the start of the month so I can put no thought into what my next read is going to be.

This is probably why I like participating in readathons so much. With the prompts, I can set up a TBR at the beginning of the month and stick to it! I’m a lover of structure I guess!

Creating these lists of new and anticipated book releases has been so helpful in creating TBRs for the month! I love being able to discover all the amazing stories being released into the world.

So, let’s get into these April 2023 book releases! There is an excellent mix of genres and tones on this list, hopefully, others can get as excited as I am for these!

In Blood Debts by Terry J. Benton-Walker, Clement and Cristina are caring for their ill mother when they discover that she might not be sick, but cursed. Although the two siblings barely speak to each other anymore, they have to come together to break the curse on their family and save their mother.

I love curses, magic, and family, and this book has all three. Also, the book cover for this story is absolutely gorgeous. That shouldn’t have an influence on me but it absolutely does, let’s be honest.

From the author of The Darkest Minds and Lore comes a new fantasy series that I couldn’t be more excited about! This book is set in the world of King Arthur. The main character, Tamsin Lark, is working as a Hollower, a thief, to keep her and her brother afloat. However, she soon learns that her missing foster father might have stolen an important ring from an Arthurian legend. Now she, along with a ton of other Hollowers, are looking for this ring and Tamsin knows she needs to be the first one to find it if she wants to save herself and her brother.

I have always loved a story set in the world of myth and legend. Although I haven’t read it yet, Bracken’s Lore has such high reviews for its portrayal of mythology, I have high hopes for this story. I’m also a fan of Merlin, the TV series, so I feel like this book will be right up my alley.

I am an absolute sucker for any book with bookish themes, especially a mysterious library with magical secrets! In this story, Ivy takes over an extensive abbey in Yorkshire due to a relative she didn’t even know existed. She becomes the lady of the estate, which includes the massive library plagued by rumors of darkness and curses.

This may be the book I am most excited about from all of the April 2023 book releases. It feels like Downtown Abbey mixed with magic, libraries, and darkness. It feels like this book was written for me, and I can’t wait to see what the author has in store with this tale.

I don’t often read novellas, but I am incredibly excited to read Untethered Sky by Fonda Lee. In this story, Ester’s mother and brother are killed by a manticore, leaving her only with her grief and her detached father. This leads to Ester going on a dangerous journey to kill the manticore that left her with so little.

This novella, only 160 pages, has already been praised by so many, I am definitely looking forward to reading it and seeing what’s so special about Ester.

The Cuban Heiress by Chanel Cleeton is about two women, Catherine and Elena. Catherine is perceived to have it all, a life full of money and recognition, however, she may be lying. Elena has just lost it all and she is set on revenge for those who wronged her. They both embark on the Morro Castle, a cruise to Havana, where they engage in a fight for survival that may change the course of both of their lives.

I have never read a historical mystery novel, so this book being set in 1934 excites me! I am intrigued by the storyline and I am thrilled to escape onto this cruise and forget the real world for a little while.

Some Desperate Glory by Emily Tesh

Although I enjoy the genre, I am not very well-read in science fiction. I want to get more books in this genre on my TBR list. Some Desperate Glory by Emily Tesh looks like a great place to start. This book is about Kyr, who has trained her whole life to be the best warrior she can be, and avenge the destruction of planet Earth. However, instead, she is assigned to the nursery to bear sons while her brother is off to fight. Kyr is willing to risk everything she knows to escape and finish what she planned to do from the start.

I have been in such a mood for a book set in space. Maybe it’s all of the Marvel movies I have been watching recently, but take me to space! I can’t wait to read this story, I am sure it is going to be a wild ride.

Anna lives on a reservation where girls have been going missing recently. Although their whereabouts are unknown, Anna believes it might have something to do with ancient tribal myths coming to life as well as new demons that are haunting her community. She wants to work to stop these evils to save her sister and the other girls from the reservation.

This book sounds like such an interesting read, and the reviews are already so good. It is currently sitting at a 4.18 on Goodreads, which is fantastic! I am sure this is going to be a riveting and exciting read.

I think people are going to stop believing I am not a romance reader with all of the romance I have been talking about recently. But to be fair, I have read another Emily Henry book, Beach Read, and I did enjoy it! So there is reasoning to this selection, I promise!

Anyway, Happy Places is a fun summer romance novel about a couple who broke up recently but have decided to pretend they are still together for their annual vacation with all of their best friends. And as we all know, this never works out, and their love and connection with each other cause issues they were not expecting.

I think I am going to save this book until we get further into the summer months. This sounds like the ultimate book to sit out in my backyard with a glass of lemonade, under the setting sun, and read. The perfect beach read if you will! (I hope you got the pun.)

If you have been a part of the book community for a while, you have probably seen one instance or another of an author reacting inappropriately to a negative book review on social media. There was even a famous occurrence that resulted in an author finding the reader’s address all because of a one-star review. It is very real.

In The Last Word, Taylor Adams takes on this idea and pushes it to a very scary level. After the main character in this novel, Emma, posts a negative review of a horror book on social media, she starts getting harassed by the author online. Simultaneously, some weird things start happening around her home. Emma soon starts to suspect that the author might be involved in these as well.

I love a good thriller novel, and I feel like this one will be even more horrifying simply because it hits so close to home. As a book reviewer myself, I am intrigued and slightly frightened to see how this story will end up.

One of the most popular tropes in the horror genre is zombies. There is something so interesting to humans about a creature that eats other humans. This is exactly what you are going to get in The Delicious Death by Kayla Cottingham. In this story, the melting of ice causes a pathogen to be released that slowly makes people hunger for human flesh. However, in this story, scientists were able to create synthetic meat that satiated that hunger. So those who were impacted by the virus are now known as ghouls and have been integrated back into society.

Zoey, Celeste, Valeria, and Jasmine are a part of this group. When they are at a music festival one weekend, Valeria becomes feral and eats another human. Soon the group realizes that someone out there is drugging ghouls and turning them feral. They must figure out how to stop this before everyone at the music festival is in danger.

This is definitely the most unique book on this list of April 2023 book releases! I’m super excited to read this one!

Where I live, it has been raining non-stop for almost two months now. A lot more rain than I am used to. The rain is quite literally pounding my window as we speak. But lucky for me, I love rain. It also puts me in the mood to read a thriller or horror novel, and there are so many exciting options on this list!

I am particularly excited about this Delicious Death, I have never read anything like that before! Zombies that are able to live in society because of a scientific invention? That is such a unique and fascinating plot!

Let me know what April 2023 book releases you are excited about in the comments below! I would love some more recommendations!
