Hi! If you have been anywhere near the online book community, specifically on Twitter, in the past day or so, you have most likely seen some of the discourse surrounding asexuality. Some vile things were said about asexuality, and I won’t get into it here because I want to keep this space a positive one and avoid the acephobia that went on. But what I will do is fight back, and so here are 5 books with asexual main characters for you to add to your TBR today!
I have always said that I wasn’t much of a contemporary reader, mainly focusing on fantasy and adventure novels. However, over the past couple of years, I have definitely found some favorites, and many more are on my TBR. Luckily, I have read a couple books with asexual characters, that were not contemporary fiction as well, so there will be a good mix of genres on this list.
This post will include a couple recommendations that I have read and loved, and a couple that are still on my TBR. I have only read a few because there is, unfortunately, such a lack of representation of asexuality in books until recently. But, that just means there is a whole list of stories for me to take in and enjoy.

1. Let’s Talk About Love by Claire Kann
Starting this off with a contemporary recommendation, Let’s Talk About Love by Claire Kann follows Alice, a college student who has sworn off love after a bad breakup with her previous girlfriend. This is however until she meets Takumi, a coworker at her library job, and her plans are turned upside down.
This is definitely on my list of favorite books. I adored Alice as a character, and her relationship with Takumi was so fun to read as it unfolded awkwardly on the page. So if you are looking for a sweet contemporary romance, this is the book for you.
2. Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire
Looking for something a little more, fantasy? Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire is a short, sweet, and heartfelt story of acceptance. When children fall into a magical world, through a doorway, or down a rabbit-hole, but somehow end up back on earth, where are they supposed to go? They go to Eleanor West’s Home for Wayward Children. When Nancy ends up here, she encounters a whole range of interesting and unique characters. Nancy herself is asexual and is immediately loved and accepted by the other children at the school once she tells them.
Honestly, this is one of my favorite cozy books. I read this a couple years ago during the Autumn season and fell in love with the warm vibes dripping from this book. This story is a part of a ten-book series, the last three having not been announced yet. I have only read the first, but I am definitely planning on doing a read of the whole series once all the books are released.

3. Sawkill Girls by Claire Legrand
Here is another recommendation that is completely different, this one is a thriller. Sawkill Girls by Claire Legrand follows a town of people sitting on the coast, that harbors a nefarious monster. When one of the rich and powerful families in town is feeding this monster young girls, Zoey must figure out why and how to stop it.
If you are wanting something atmospheric and spooky, this is the book for you. With a dark forest and troubling waters, the author brings the reader directly into the story. I couldn’t help but feel goosebumps while reading it. The main character, Zoey’s, asexuality is never used as a “horror” element, which I am always afraid of in thrillers.
4. Loveless by Alice Oseman (TBR)
Loveless by Alice Oseman is the story of Georgia, a new college student who has never been in love, but is ready for it. However, as she goes through the process of finding the one, she might be finding out a lot more about herself than she was expecting. The main character, Georgia, is going through a self-discovery throughout this story, in terms of her sexuality.
I have heard so many good things about this book, I was so excited when I read it had asexual representation in it. I also love reading about college, so this is sure to become a favorite of mine.
5. Beyond the Black Door by A.M. Strickland (TBR)
In Beyond the Black Door by A.M. Strickland, Kamai is a soulwalker. She can go into other people’s souls while she sleeps. But while she does, she is haunted by a black door that she is never supposed to enter, until one day, she does.
I love a dark fantasy story, especially if it promises to have asexual rep. The main character, Kamai, is asexual and enters into a romantic relationship. *chef’s kiss* I can’t wait to meet the characters in this story and fall in love with the plot. Plus, that book cover is to die for!
