5 Bookish Halloween Costumes to Spruce up Your Stay at Home Celebration

You know, there has been a lot of talk around about how Halloween isn’t going to be as fun this year. People are moping about no parties, no trick or treating, and no pumpkin patches. I don’t get it! That doesn’t mean you can’t have fun! There are so many fun things you can do with your Halloween. You can still have scary movie marathons, you can still eat all the candy corn, and you can even have a Zoom Halloween party! It may look a little different than in previous years, but it can still be fun. Change sucks, trust me, but I have been trying to adapt as best I can so I can bring even a little joy into my life.

I was never one for parties anyway, so my Halloween is going to pretty much look exactly the same. I am going to watch a bunch of spooky, Halloween themed movies and eat candy and drink hot cocoa and burn a fall candle and all that fun stuff! Halloween is one of those nights I love staying alone, recharging, and enjoying the energy that the holiday brings. I usually don’t dress up in dramatic costumes. I do have an adorable and cozy black cat onesie that I love to wear this time of year, and I hope it is cool enough on Halloween for me to actually wear it without sweating.

But that doesn’t mean I don’t love seeing everyone else’s Halloween costumes. Some of you get so creative I love it. I particularly like seeing group or couple costumes. Especially the punny ones!

1. The whole cast from The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson

I know this wouldn’t be the most obvious costume, but isn’t that the most fun. It makes it especially special when someone guesses who you are. I think this would be a really fun group costume, where everyone in your household or everyone at your Zoom Halloween party wears the costume of a different character! You could even binge-watch the TV show while you’re at it!

2. Liz Lighty and Co. on prom night from You Should See Me in a Crown by Leah Johnson

And I mean really during prom. Sure you could dress up as the characters as they are living their normal lives but that would just be… normal outfits. I am thinking big puffy ball gowns and big grows on heads. That would be so fun, especially because I didn’t go to prom so I could live it now.

3. Pirates from Daughter of the Pirate King by Tricia Levenseller

A pirate is just any old costume, but if you say it is from a book it becomes infinitely cooler, I promise. Just get some leather boots and a puffy pirate shirt and you are all set to take over the storming seas. “It’s a pirates life for me!”

4. Mirabel from The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern

She is pink-haired, beautiful, and fierce. Who wouldn’t want to dress up as her? Bonus, if you want to get a little inception-y, you can dress up as Mirabel dressed up as Max from Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak. You could be a person dressed as a book character dressed as a book character. You can even include your cat in the fun, there are plenty of cats at The Starless Sea.

5. A Rockstar from Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Although this wasn’t my favorite book I ever read, I do think it would be really fun to dress up as a rock star. This would also be a really easy one to do if you are invited last minute to a Zoom party! Bonus, make this a couple costume with the two characters who are in love that I can’t currently remember their names.

So, go dress up! Go celebrate Halloween in a safe, socially distanced manner! And remember, always wear a mask while in public, it will help stop the spread so much!

Anyway, I can’t believe we are a few weeks out from Halloween! We are so close. Except it already feels like Christmas in most stores. I am not a fan haha! Maybe in November but not October! Halloween hasn’t even happened yet!

Are you dressing up as a bookish character for Halloween? Or any character? Let me know in the comments below!

Love, Jackie
