Are you ever amazed at book cover art? The ability for an artist to take a book, something that often has no visuals, and creates something so visual is amazing. Recently, book cover artists have been putting out incredible work! As a result, I am constantly in awe of the beautiful artwork when I am walking around my local book store. With Fall here, I wanted to take some time to appreciate some Autumnal book covers that I have been loving this year.
I’ll admit it, I definitely judge books by their covers. When I am walking through the book store, I don’t feel like turning over every book to read the summary. A book’s cover art is so important, no matter how much we want to deny it. As a writer, I think I am most excited to see the cover art that my book will have. When I get published, that will be the most exciting part of the process, I am sure of it.
I wish I could include all of the artists of these beautiful covers in this post, but it is often so difficult to find the cover artists if you don’t own the book. Also, some books don’t include the artist on the information page. So I will have to leave a couple of those spots blank. But I will update this post with the cover artists if I find them.
I have written a version of this post for three years now, this will be the fourth! You can click here for last year’s post, here for my 2019 edition, and here for my 2018 version. Anyway, let’s get into the post. Here are some Autumnal book covers that make me feel all the spooky season feels.
Title: Horrid
Author: Katrina Leno
Publisher: Little, Brown Books for Young Readers
Release Date: September 15, 2020

This book cover is hauntingly beautiful. The black roses and the colors make it slightly creepy yet mesmerizing at the same time. Overall, this is definitely one of my favorite Autumnal book covers.
Title: Nothing But Blackened Teeth
Author: Cassandra Khaw
Publisher: Nightfire
Release Date: October 15, 2021
Cover Design: Unknown
This book cover most certainly has to be one of the scariest I have ever seen. The fact that the ghost has no eyes and a bloody mouth makes it perfect for the Halloween season. The muted colors are also fantastic, leading to the creepy effect the designer was going for.
Title: Cemetery Boys
Author: Aiden Thomas
Publisher: Swoon Reads
Release Date: September 1, 2020
Cover Design: Unknown
The cover of Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas just screams fall to me. I think it’s the coloring and the giant moon in the background, but I adore this cover, it is one of my favorites.
Title: Mexican Gothic
Author: Silvia Moreno-Garcia
Publisher: Del Rey
Release Date: June 30, 2020
Cover Design: Unknown
There is something so haunting about the cover of Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. The colors are also perfect for the fall season. I haven’t taken my eyes off this book cover since I bought it.
Title: Witches of Ash & Ruin

I mean, the creepy crow and the powerful red coloring are so spooky. The cover of Witches of Ash and Ruin by E. Latimer is the perfect Halloween book cover.
Title: The Bone Houses
Author: Emily Lloyd-Jones
Publisher: Little, Brown Books for Young Readers
Release Date: September 24, 2019
Cover Design: Unknown
The skull on the cover of Bones Houses by Emily Lloyd-Jones reminds me so much of a graveyard, but the filigree design on the skull makes it so much better. Another one of those hauntingly beautiful book covers. I also just love the simple style of book covers, like this one.
Title: A Lesson in Vengeance
Author: Victoria Lee
Publisher: Delecorte Press
Release Date: August 3, 2021
Cover Design: Maggie Enterrios
You all know I love dark academia, but I also love the cover of A Lesson in Vengeance by Victoria Lee. This is because the spiderwebs and the dark purple flowers make this a very subtle autumnal book cover.
Title: These Violent Delights
Author: Chloe Gong
Publisher: Margaret K. McElderry Books
Release Date: November 17, 2020
Cover Design: Billelis
You can’t go wrong with the classic YA snake book cover, can you, especially with my phobia of snakes. The red flowers are also a really nice touch, they remind me of blood which is very spooky.
Title: Firekeeper’s Daughter
Author: Angeline Boulley
Publisher: Henry, Hold and Co.
Release Date: March 16, 2021
Cover Design: Unknown
Firekeeper’s Daughter by Angeline Boulley is definitely on this list because of the fall colors on the book cover. The colors work so beautifully with the design, I bought this book purely because of the cover art. I don’t actually know what the book is about.
Title: The Ex Hex
Author: Erin Sterling
Publisher: Avon
Release Date: September 28, 2021
Cover Design: Unknown
I am not a romance reader, but when I saw the cover of The Ex Hex by Erin Sterling, I knew I needed to add it to my TBR. With the little witch flying across the moon, this has to be one of the cutest autumnal book cover I have ever seen.
These Autumnal book covers all remind me so much of fall and Halloween, I love them.
