Hello all! As I have been in a bit of a reading slump, I haven’t had much content to post on here. But, just when I was about to pick a random book tag just so I could talk about books again, my wonderful friend, Iza, tagged me in what looks to be a really fun tag! I am honestly so excited to be writing about books again. I feel like I am coming back to myself after a… bad couple of months.
Anyway! Definitely go check out Iza’s blog, Ravens and Pages. They post such amazing content, and their reviews are everything! Go check them out!! Thank you so much to Iza for tagging me in this, and bringing me back into the bookish world.
Alright, let’s talk about some of my bookish lasts. Don’t worry, the questions aren’t sad, I promise. No ends here, just fun bookish discussions.
Warning: There is a spoiler for the March OwlCrate book, so if you haven’t opened it yet, don’t go past question 5.
1. The Last Book I gave up on
Honestly, I am more impressed with myself that I actually started this book. I started reading this book at the beginning of quarantine last year when everyone was dewy-eyed and ready to start all the art projects (am I the only one who is nostalgic for this time) and I was actually enjoying it. It was a slow start, but I was into the high fantasy vibes that were happening. Unfortunately, depression got the better of me, and I never continued after the first 100 pages.
But this doesn’t mean I don’t want to go back to this book. I really really do. In fact, I added it to my list of 21 books to read in 2021. So it is going to happen this year… hopefully.
2. The Last Book I Re-Read
If you recall, last year I decided to start my reread of The Hunger Games series about a month before the release of the new prequel, A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. I had plans to be all prepared for the new book. Well, here I am over a year later, only finishing the second book in the series. I am so close to finishing the third though, so soon I will finally be reading a new book in one of my favorite series, which is super exciting.
But let’s be honest, I am nothing if not predictable. When have I ever read a book I was excited for in a timely manner?
3. The Last Book I Bought
I actually wasn’t planning on buying this book. It interested me, and I am a sucker for hype, but I have been really trying to let the hype die down before I buy a book. However, I was at Target, buying a book for my mom, and it was just sitting here, beautiful and full of words. It also was pretty cheap, 13 dollars or so, and I kind of just added it to my cart. You know how that goes. I have no control over what books I buy.
Anyway, I have been doing really well! I actually haven’t bought a book in months before this, so I have no guilt or remorse for buying this book. I just hope it’s actually a good book. Have you read it? Any thoughts?
4. The Last Book I Said I Read and Didn’t
Now, don’t get me wrong, I don’t like to lie about the books I’ve read. Reading is a very personal activity and I hate when people judge that. BUT, I do fall prey to feeling “embarrassed” for reading mostly YA books. I know! I read what I enjoy, and I shouldn’t care what other people think… but I still do sometimes.
So, when one of my employers asked me if I had read The Goldfinch, after finding out I am a reader and writer, I just went right along with it. Thank goodness she didn’t ask me any further questions, because I would have probably panicked and failed.
However, I am pretty sure that Donna Tartt includes a lot of problematic elements in their books, and I think they might also be problematic as well. Through research, I see that there is racism in this book, so it looks like I’m not missing much by not reading it.
5. The Last Book You Wrote in the Margins of
As I mentioned in question 2, I have been rereading and annotating The Hunger Games series. I am currently halfway through Mockingjay, Writing in the margins, highlighting, the whole nine yards.
6. The Last Book I Had Signed
Unfortunately, I have never had the pleasure of meeting an author and having a book personally signed for me. I honestly think I would be too anxious and too awkward. I definitely live in an area where I have access to these signings, but I can never work up the nerve. Anyway, I do own many signed books because of my subscription to OwlCrate. So, Sweet and Bitter Magic was the March book and each book from OwlCrate is signed.
But do you want to know what my ultimate dream is? To have a signed copy of The Hunger Games. I know Suzanne Collins doesn’t really do events, but I would cry if I ever got my hands on a copy.
7. The Last Book I Lost
I, miraculously, have not lost a book in a very very long time. Actually, I can only think of 2 books that I have actually lost, and one of them I did eventually found. So I will tell you about this one, Breaking Pointe, which I never recovered.
In high school, like 8 years ago or something, I was at practice for color guard (the ones who spin flags on the field with the marching band). I had this book with me, and I was reading it whenever we got a break. At that point, I was just interested in dance, but I wasn’t taking classes or training, so was eating up any and all media that had to do with the art form. So, after that practice, when I was home, full of food, and showered, I went to grab the book from my backpack to read and it wasn’t there. I looked the next day but I couldn’t find it.
8. The Last Book I Had to Replace
Well, I guess this is as good a time as any to say that I recently bought myself another copy of this book, and I am planning on reading it soon! I do love me some good dance books.
9. The Last Book I had an Argument Over
So, I have been sitting here for a while and I have yet to come up with a book that I have had an argument over… in my whole life. Except maybe back when I was a kid and I didn’t like reading. My mom would always try to get me to read books and I would argue with her because I didn’t want to.
Anyway, I am going to take this prompt a little differently and tell you a book I had conflicting thoughts on than a lot of other people.
Red Rising had been on my TBR for the longest, and I was finally able to read it this past month. I was… so disappointed. The way people were describing this book, I thought it would be the perfect read for me, but I was SO BORED the entire time. I am so sorry but this book could have been half the length.
10. The Last Book I Couldn’t get Hold of
I don’t tend to be one to search for collectors editions and certain copies of books, but for my favorite books… I make exceptions. But of course, with beautiful copies come steep prices, and this special edition Waterstones edition with the painted spines and protective box and all that is either out of stock or like 200 dollars on second-hand sites. So I have no plans on ever getting my hands on these.
I also want those beautiful white editions of The Hunger Games series with gold edges from New Zealand, but again, the same issue. Maybe one day I’ll be lucky and I’ll find them at a garage sale or something.
Those questions were actually pretty fun to answer, and they really made me think. It also feels so good to write about books again, I love the feeling of my fingers flying over the keyboard, expressing my thoughts about all things bookish. Feels good.
Again, thank you so much Iza for tagging me!
I will be tagging…
Lois from Lois Reads Books
Amy from Amy Jane Alice
Cora from Tea Party Princess
Thank you so much for stopping by! Let me know in the comments below what the last book was that you had an argument about. I’m curious if that is a common thing!
