For my entire life, I have never been much of a resolution setter. I would watch all my friends and peers coming up with all these goals and plans for the New Year and I never understood it. What made January 1 different from any other day? However, this year feels different. I have a lot of goals for 2022, and I am pretty determined to achieve them. So in that spirit, I want to talk about some New Year’s Resolutions for book lovers.
I have been a reader for a long time. Although not as long as people who have loved reading their entire life, my almost 7 years as an avid reader have taught me a lot.
I have read a lot of different styles and genres of books, I have read some really good books and some really bad books. And I have been introduced to a lot of different authors.
Despite all this, there is still so much more I can discover from the world of reading. There are genres I haven’t tried, and books I haven’t read. This is why I am setting some New Year’s resolutions for book lovers this year. So I can expand my reading horizons and maybe find some new favorites!
I also think the reading community is pretty neat, and I want to spend more time listening to my fellow readers!
1. Read at Least 2 Books from all the Main Genres
When I find something I enjoy, I tend to stick with it. This is probably why the majority of my reading is fantasy or adventure stories. So in 2022, I want to do something different. I want to read at least 2 books in each of the main genres, which include:
- Romance
- Historical Fiction
- Fantasy
- Science-Fiction
- Non-Fiction
I know there are way more genres than this, but these are the main ones. So ten of the books I plan to read in the coming year are going to be from these five genres in hopes of expanding my reading horizons, and potentially find some new favorites. You never know, maybe I will become a romance reader.
2. Write a Book Review for Every Book Read
This resolution is geared more towards the content creators of the bookish community, but they can also include all book lovers.
As a blogger, one of my favorite posts to create is book reviews. Whether I loved a book or hated it, I like figuring out why I felt the way I did about a certain book.
So in 2022, I want to write a book review for every book I read.
For those who aren’t content creators, you can still do this with a book journal! Write small or large entries in a journal about every book you read. You can get creative with this as well, using visual representations for what you liked or hated in a book.
I feel like by doing this, I will have a clearer picture of what I like and don’t like in books. The goal of this resolution is to improve my writing as well. Through the book reviews, I can implement things I like in my one writing while avoiding things I don’t.
3. Only Keep Books that you Liked, or That you Want to Read
Over the years, I have developed quite a collection of books. I am so lucky to have access to thrift stores with a really good selection of reads. So, my bookshelves are a little stuffed currently.
But I also have a knack for collecting, so that has certainly exasperated the issue. I am sure this is a problem for other book lovers as well.
So, in 2022, a great New Year’s resolution for book lovers is to get rid of any books you didn’t like, or that you know you don’t want to read.
By donating these books, you can make sure you are keeping only what will be useful to you, or that puts a smile on your face.
4. Don’t Worry About How Many Books You Read
When You first get into the bookish online community, like bookstagram or book tok, it is easy to forget that reading isn’t a job, it is a hobby. It doesn’t matter how fast or slow you read, you are still a reader. (Honestly, I wish I was paid to read.)
I definitely forget that sometimes. So in 2022, I am working on a complete mental shift on reading. If I don’t feel like reading, I am not going to force myself. If I don’t make my Goodreads reading goal (which I never have anyway) I am not going to worry about it.
I have been wondering why reading doesn’t give me the same satisfaction that it used to, and I think this is part of the reason. 2022 is the year I stop caring about how many books I read and start caring about how much I am enjoying reading them.
5. Join in the Bookish Community More
This is definitely a personal resolution, but I am sure other book lovers feel the same way!
When I started reading, I was obsessed with talking about it, writing about it, and thinking about it. I mean, that is the whole reason I started my bookstagram and book blog in the first place. To have an outlet.
Through this outlet, I have met so many amazing people that I have fallen out of touch with recently.
In 2022, I want to be more connected with the bookish online community. You guys are pretty cool, and I love having online conversations with other readers!

I am going to come back to this post in the last week of December in 2022 and see how I did! We will see if I was able to follow these New Year’s resolutions for book lovers!
The point of new year’s resolutions is to motivate and inspire, not to stress people out. But I also understand how they can do that, as a perfectionist. For me, if I miss one thing, I will give up completely, and I don’t want to do that in the new year.
So try your best! Whatever you do, make decisions that will make you happy. Because in the end, that’s all we have, so we have to run with it!
I am excited about what amazing books and bookish discussions we will have in the new year! See you all there (and also tomorrow and the day after because Blogmas isn’t over)!
i absolutely loved this post! thank you for motivating me 🙂
Yay, I am so glad you found some motivation! I hope you have a fantastic 2022!
So 2022 has ended. What’s your New Year Resolutions 2023? If you haven’t decided yet, you may want to do it now as we are closing mid-January. A resolution can be anything. It can be related to your work, food, gym, or just about anything fun.
