My Favorite Genres to Read in Autumn

Yesterday I talked a little bit about my comfort books and how much they mean to me. I love to think about things that make me happy, so looking back at that post, I can see a trend in these books. They usually fall into certain genres. We all have a favorite genre, right? Genre fiction is, in my opinion, the most entertaining to read, and is super helpful in ensuring that you are picking up a book you like.

I read in a wide range of genres, from romance to dark academia. But there are definitely certain genres that are good for certain times of years. Who doesn’t love reading about two people falling in love while running around a beach town drinking iced coffee and eating ice cream! I love it, it makes me happy and full of light.

But, during the darker months of the year, when the days are shorted and the weather is cooler, those books don’t have the same impact. I am not in the mood to watch people splashing about a pool if it is too cold for me to go to the pool. So, I definitely have certain genres that I enjoy best in the summer, and other genres that just hit different during the fall!

I am going to include some books on my TBR for each genre that I hope to get to before the end of the year!

Fantasy

First and foremost is one of my favorite genres. Now, I can read fantasy any time of year and honestly, sometimes all I want to read during the summer months is fantasy, in an attempt to beat the heat. But, there is something different about reading fantasy during the cooler months, all bundled up in blankets.

Also, why is fantasy always set during snow storms? I don’t think I have read a fantasy written during the summer…

Horror/Thriller

I mean, this one is pretty obvious. When it is rainy outside, or dark, it is so easy to get spooked which is probably why fall became the spooky season. Halloween is the perfect time to be scared, and what better way than through horror and thriller stories.

This is actually the first year I am reading horror and I have enjoyed it so much! These three books are on my TBR, and I can’t wait to read them.

Dark Academia

This is another genre that I am just getting into the year. I am currently reading The Ninth House, and I am obsessed with the vibes it is giving me. I miss college so much, and I like dark stuff, so I feel there is no better genre to get both of these things!

I have been seeing a lot of positive things about these three books, I think they will be wonderful reads after I finish The Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo.

Now I need to go actually read some of these books. A couple of them I have lined u to start really soon, so I am excited to read more from my favorite genres of the Autumn season. Magic, spook, and darkness are all the best parts of fall, and there is not better way to enjoy that than through stories.

What are your favorite genres to read during the fall months? Let me know in the comments below!

Love, Jackie
