You know that feeling when there are so many books being released that look absolutely amazing, but you know you will never be able to catch up and read them all. I have been really feeling that way a lot lately. I am still catching up on 2020 book releases, like A Song Below Water, let alone books released this year. Well, let’s be honest, I still have books from 10 years ago that I need to catch up on.
But anyway, I was able to borrow the audiobook of A Song Below Water recently, and I was more than thrilled to dive into this story. I had been waiting a long time to read it. With all the positive reviews and excitement around the book, I couldn’t help but squeal when I got the notification that my hold was ready.
As soon as I loaded this on my phone, I started a journey way better than I was expecting.

I absolutely adored this book. Everything about it, from the characters to the plot, was beautifully written and intricately planned. I was hooked until the last page, and I am so ready for the second book.
One of my favorite aspects of this book was the friendship between Tavia and Effie. Their relationship was so strong, and so beautifully written. A lot of the books I read include fights between friends, and I am tired of it. Yes, friends fight. Yes, it is important to show healthy means of dealing with conflict. However, sometimes I just want to see friends be happy. I want to see them love and support each other unconditionally and that is exactly what you get with these two main characters.
Another thing I love was the inclusion of the International Baccalaureate program. I too was an IB student. Just put a smile on my face, hearing the character talk about service time and other stuff I haven’t thought of since high school.
The most important feature of A Song Below Water was the skillful weaving of real-life racism with the mystical xenophobia in the story. It pulled me directly into the story with its ease and clarity. Every day, racism is prevalent and real. So, I fell directly into the story while reading this. Racism and the fear of Sirens intertwined, making the story very real and very immediate.
This book was top notch, and I can’t wait to read more in the sequel.
I seem to be reading a lot more audiobooks lately. For some reason, every time I pick up a physical book, I can not force myself to read more than a page at a time. I am trying hard to get rid of that, but for now, audiobooks have been my lifesaver. There is nothing better than doing chores or crafting while listening to audiobooks.
