Olympic Games Readathon: What Do I Plan on Reading?

Hello, all! It has been a while since I have read, blogged, or done anything bookish. For me, this year has been infinitely harder than the last. But, I am trying to do things I love in hope that my mental health will improve. So, I have decided to participate in the Olympic Games Readathon this month! I participated in this last year, and had so much fun! I love readathons with big storylines and group efforts. You can find all the information about this readathon on their Twitter, linked here. I may be a few days late in starting this, but I am ready to go!

For this readathon, you select a patron god who you will compete for. I went between a couple choices, but I ultimately picked Hades. I am feeling spicy, so might as well compete for the God of Death, right?

There are also a lot of bonus prompts. I am going to find a book for each prompt, but I know I won’t finish all of these books. I just want to be prepared for each prompt!

Mandatory Challenges for the Olympic Games Readathon

1. Read a Stand-Alone Book

The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle Book Cover

I know the summer usually puts people in the mood for fun romances set at the beach. But I tend to lean towards murder and mystery. I have been curious about The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton ever since my mom kept mistaking it for The 7 Husbands of Evelyn Hugo a couple years ago. Did you know, the reason the author made it 7 1/2 instead of just 7 was to avoid confusion with Evelyn Hugo?

2. Read a Book with a Dark Cover

Sorcery of Thorns Book Cover

Sorcery of Thornes by Margeret Rogerson has been on my TBR for years. I love reading anything about libraries, let alone magical libraries. So, when I finally got my hands on a copy, I knew I had to fit it into my TBR somehow.

3. Choose a Book from Your TBR at Random

Tiny Pretty Things book cover

For this prompt, I wanted to pick a book from my list of 21 books I want to read in 2021, a list I have not made much leeway on. That is to say, I have only read one book…

Honestly, I closed my eyes and chose, but you know I love books about dancers. Plus, I really need to read this so I can finally watch the Netflix series. It is just staring me in the face every time I open the app.

4. Read a Book Where a Character has to Hide Their Identity

Eliza and her monsters book cover

I didn’t have a book ready for this prompt. I literally typed the prompt into google and looked through the options that came up. Eliza and Her Monsters by Francesca Zappia came up, and I have had that on my list for a long time because I was told it had anxiety rep in it. I was just beginning to deal with my anxiety a few years ago and wanted to read more characters with it. Of course, it has been like 5 years since then and it is still on my TBR, but I will (try) to read it this month!

5. Read a Book Featuring a Wealthy Character

People Like Us Book cover

Oh, how I wish I was wealthy. But also eat the rich… you know? Anyway, I didn’t have anything that fit this prompt on my TBR, so I had to look this one up as well. But I have heard a lot about People Like Us by Dana Mele, and I do love reading about murder and rich kids at private schools. It should have an entire genre to itself. Does it already?

Bonus Challenges

1. A Book Featuring a Character You Would not get Along With

Book cover of Vicious by V.E. Schwab

This one was tough, because I can’t really tell if I like a character until I start reading a book. BUT, this book is supposed to be about villains so i assume I wouldn’t get along with the characters in real life. But we will see if I am correct once I actually crack this book open.

2. A Book Shorter Than 200 Pages

Strange Weather in Tokyo book cover

I was supposed to read this book a couple months ago for the Asian Readathon. I was supposed to read it earlier than that for a buddy read. I have yet to read it…

Now is the time.

3. A Book Published Within the Last 5 Years

These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong book cover

These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong intrigues me so much! Plus, it was published rather recently, so perfect!

4. A Book Featuring Magical Creatures

Book cover of Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon

I am laughing at me actually saying I could read The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon in a month. Nah, but maybe I will start it! And it has dragons!

5. A Book that Takes Pace on or near a Body of Water

Book cover of To Kill a Kingdom

I think this book is about mermaids, pirates, or sirens, something like that. The cover has the ocean on it.

6. The Next Book in a Series

Shiny Broken Pieces Book cover

Well, if I can get to Tiny Pretty Things this month, I might as well move onto the sequel, Tiny Broken Pieces.

7. One of Your most Anticipated Books

The Ones We're Meant to Find Book Cover

I was so excited to get my hands on a copy of The Ones We’re Meant to Find by Joan He. Ever since I read the premise of this book, I knew I needed to read it. I am telling you, something about the summer makes me crave all the mysteries.

I am definitely looking forward to competing for the king of the dead in the Olympic Games Readathon! Got to support the team, am I right?

Let’s hope I can actually finish a book this month. And maybe even write some book reviews while I am at it?

Let me know if you are participating in this readathon? I would love to see what you are planning on reading!

Love, Jackie
