I have actually been going crazy for audiobooks lately! I had only just started listening to them last year, but over 2020, I have dived headfirst into the beautiful method of reading. It has been a rough year for most people, and that has definitely put me in many reading slumps. I have been in a reading slump since the beginning of June! The last thing I want to do when I am feeling anxious is pick up a book, where my mind can wander, and I forget the last 5 pages I read.
Audiobooks, however, have allowed me to keep reading, even when I didn’t have the mental capacity to do so. The narrator just keeps reading on, not bothered by my spiraling thoughts. Plus, even if I do forget what I just read, it is easier to flip back a couple seconds on the audiobook than it is a physical book.
Anyway, now that it is the coziest season of the year, the best audiobooks are coming out. I swear, there is nothing cozier than putting on some headphones and hitting play on fantasy or horror read. I will never be convinced that the best way to read horror is not through audio, because it is. The added element of sound makes the books that much spookier.
This list has something for everyone. From horror to contemporary, these books are perfect to cuddle up to, with a big mug of hot cocoa and some snacks.
1. The Sun Down Motel by Simone St. James
This book was actually one of the first horror books I have ever read, and it was a good place to start! You can check out my review of the book here on my blog! This book had everything you need in horror, ghosts, murder, and mystery. Spooky and perfect to curl up to.
2. Clap When you Land by Elizabeth Acedvedo
Honestly, there is nothing more relaxing than Elizabeth Acevedo’s voice. I just want to curl up in my jack-o-lantern blanket with a cup of tea and listen to anything she writes. I am obsessed, and I am anxiously awaiting her next piece of art. It will be preordered immediately. Audio is absolutely the superior way of consuming Acevedo’s work as she reads it herself. She is a well-practiced spoken word artist and is the perfect narrator for her own work.
3. This is How you Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone
This book was so unique, I have never read anything like it before. This is something you can sit down and read, untangling the web that the author created within this story. This one takes a little more concentration than the others, but it is well worth it in the end! I strange, sci-fi, mystery, romance.
4. Get a Life, Chloe Brown by Talia Hibbert
There is nothing more cozy and warm than this romance story… and I don’t even like romance. But there was something so heartwarming about this story, that I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face. I was laughing and crying along with the characters. If you aren’t in the mood for something spooky, this might just be your cup of tea!
5. We are Okay by Nina LaCour
I have been still digesting this book since I read it in June, and I still can’t figure out what it was about this book that made me feel so… comfortable? That’s not really the right word, because this book was far from comfortable. But this book felt good to me. But it is really sad. I don’t know! The characters are full of grief, loss, and uncomfortable relationships. But it is something to get lost in on a rainy day.
6. Wilder Girls by Rory Power
This book is a thoroughly weird and strange retelling of lord of the flies. It is gory and awesome and I am so glad I listened to it with the audiobook. If you are like me and hate long chapters, I would recommend the audiobook to you as well. The story is perfect for the fall season.
7. These Witches Don’t Burn by Isabel Sterling
These Witched Don’t Burn by Isabel Sterling is one of my absolute favorite reads of the season! I absolutely flew through this book. I love all the characters and I seriously need to get my hands on the sequel. Plus, can we talk about this cover?! I am obsessed!
8. Sawkill Girls by Claire Legrande
Sawkill Girls by Claire Legrand’s book was actually spooky, and that was so unexpected for me. I didn’t think a YA would be able to do that for me but this one did. Curl up to this spooky read, but maybe don’t turn out the lights…
9. Daughter of the Pirate King by Tricia Levenseller
Daughter of the Pirate King by Tricia Levenseller was another book that really surprised me. I am not usually one for pirate adventures, but I adored the process of this book, and the surprise ending made me excited to read the sequel. You will definitely get lost at sea while reading to this audiobook.
10. A Song of Wraiths and Ruin by Roseanne A. Brown
Oh, I absolutely adored A Song of Wraiths and Ruin by Roseanne A. Brown. I got lost while reading the audiobook, falling in love with the characters, and following the action. The world that the author built was immaculate, and it was portrayed through the audiobook beautifully. Check out my 5/5 star review of this book here!
I did a post similar to this last year, and it is so fun to compile a list of all the new books I have read over the past year. I also can list more books because of how many I have been reading lately. You can see the first list of cozy audiobooks here!
